![]() The point being is that, yes an application must be coded to handled deadlocks it expects *where* it expects them, but MSS is causing an egregious number of unexpected deadlocks, and I wonder if that's due to page locking and/or lock escalation policies. ![]() Which is why the application should be coded to handle that. A properly designed database on a improperly configured SQL Server can most definately deadlock unexpectedly. Those aren't database design problems, they are configuration problems. Intraquery parallelism deadlocks are also becoming more commonplace due to the reduction of cost for multi-core multi-processor hardware. Communication Buffer deadlocks can occur infrequently that you won't fix because the lock is not on a resource you can control or change. These days not all deadlocks are preventable. That is bad application side design coupled with potentially problemattic database design as well. The point being made is that the database transaction problem of a deadlock shouldn't break the application on the front end. It's not that every request has to be retried, or that they have to retry all the time. Even in the worst instance of deadlocking I have dealt with while consulting, and deadlocks were occuring roughly every 3-5 seconds, this was a very small portion of the overall workload that was actually being submitted. Nope, I said what I meant, and I meant what I said there.Ī properly designed application would have handling in place to deal with a deadlock occurence. Imagine, for example, if all client applications to any server they talk to had to retry their requests all the time - like, say, your web browser to any web server? What was rather meant, I hope, is that a properly designed database would never get you into unexpected deadlocks. can intercept the 1205 error and resubmit the deadlock victim request back to SQL Server" is forgetting a few basic things. ![]() The claim "that a deadlock in and of itself is not necessarily a problem" and suggestion that "A properly designed and coded application. ![]() ![]() ![]() However, it won’t perform much better than our budget-friendly stick pick. To be sure, a custom-carved, maple-handled Italian stick umbrella with a twill canopy, such as the Davek Savile we tested, is long on style. “The average price for a nice stick umbrella is around $80 to $120,” Levee said. But whether an umbrella is worth that investment depends more on your style proclivities or if you tend to lose umbrellas. If you want to spend much more than $30 on an umbrella, you can get something special. But how many are you buying?” With these, it’s less a matter of if than of when it will finally break (often on the same day you bought it). You can find ones for even less, but we wouldn’t recommend them, nor would Levee: “Yes, you can get a $5 umbrella in the street and a $10 umbrella at the drugstore. We discovered it’s possible to get an under-$25 model that’s solid enough to bend in the wind and reliably snap back into shape-so you won’t be heartbroken if you leave it at a restaurant. Stick umbrellas often (though not always) come with a cane handle made of wood or laminate, leather, or rubberized plastic. Although canopy and rib materials aren’t of primary importance, leather, pleather, and rubberized plastic handles offer a much better grip than hard plastic ones-especially when they’re molded into a shape that follows the hand’s natural contours. ![]() After all, if you’ve taken a commercial flight, you’ve entrusted your life to critical components made of aluminum, such as wing ribs and roots the process is not functionally different from that used to make soda cans, but it’s on an incomprehensibly larger ( and epoch-making) scale. “What’s better is steel and fiberglass.”) But this could be an unfair generalization. (“Stay away from it,” said Rain or Shine’s Peggy Levee. Aluminum construction is sometimes considered a weakness, probably because of the metal’s association with soda cans and cooking foil. ![]() The ribs and shaft are usually constructed from steel, aluminum, and fiberglass, either alone or in combination. Some boast an additional quick-dry coating of Teflon (though we’ve found this doesn’t make much difference in practice). All umbrellas use a synthetic fabric-usually polyester or nylon-for the canopy. What matters: the quality of the design and production, and the specific alloy employed. Materials don’t vary much among brands. But we allowed some wiggle room for the larger stick umbrellas, since you typically tote them more like a cane or walking stick. After all, you’ll probably be carrying it with you most of the time. We sought a main pick that weighed less than a pound, with preference given to lighter models. And on ultra-compact full-size umbrellas, the ribs have four joints rather than two, so there are more potential points of failure. But we don’t recommend ultra-compact models: Though banana-sized umbrellas do exist, their canopies are often too small to be effective. We focused on umbrellas that were shorter than 12 inches fully folded-with the exception of some stick umbrellas-since most people want something that fits into a car’s glove box or a backpack’s water-bottle pocket. ![]() By contrast, mini umbrellas are generally no better than a wide-brimmed hat, so we skipped those models. In 20, we looked into larger options, for those who may value extra coverage stretching to the abdomen. It’s better to think of an umbrella as protection for your hairdo and upper torso as you scurry between car and office or subway and home. Blowing rain and puddles inevitably produce wet calves and pant cuffs, dampened thighs, and even soaked waists. Regardless of an umbrella’s size, no model will keep you dry from head to toe, especially if there’s a breeze. That’s why this is the range for most manufacturers’ standard or “full-size” portable umbrellas. ![]() Whether it is the way you came or the path the enemy tore through it will make a difference. You don’t have to turn directly around and head back, but instead of continuing forward simply pick a route that leads you back to help. It makes no sense to continue pushing on if the enemy is already in a position to start capturing your flag or over run your flank and then flank you from behind. Smaller things like sights, turret ring, radio aren’t as reliable or easy to damage reliably but learning to use the gun, tracks, and engine/fuel tanks more often helps more than you would imagine.ĭoesn’t having your driver or loader die really suck? I thought so especially if you already used that med kit. For German tanks you can usually shoot through the frontal lower hull as well and do engine damage as the transmission is on the front of the tank on most German tanks. Instead of shooting the front half of their tank if you are on their side, aim for the rear section in the engine area. Knowing that for most tanks shooting the rear of the tank does engine/fuel damage that catches them on fire and also slows them down is very important. ![]() It might not always do HP damage but it does immobilize that enemy allowing your artillery and support to focus in on them to dispatch of them easily. Learning to shoot the tracks is also very important. As a low tier tank facing a higher tier this is sometimes your only option to survive since it will buy you time to scurry away. Knowing that shooting someone’s gun(aim for part closest to turret or shoot the hole that the gun comes out of) has a good chance of either damaging it effecting accuracy or even knocking it out for quite sometime can be the difference in living or being torn to shreds. There are some ways of controlling globbing. So when you type rm *.bar, what's actually happening is that the shell expands the argument list to foo.bar, then passes that to the rm command. So typing echo * in the same directory will output foo.bar. One of the most common expansions is *, which is expanded to filenames in the current directory.Ī simple way to look at globs at work is to use echo, which prints back all arguments passed to it through the shell. You can see a list of bash file name expansions here. One of these is called 'file name expansion', otherwise know as 'globbing'. What's happening here is that your shell, which is the program you are using to type in commands, is performing some transformations before passing the arguments on to the command. However if you type rm *.bar in the same directory, it will delete the file. Note the single quotes around the file pattern, they tell the shell to pass the argument to the shell as it is. So if you are in a directory containing the file foo.bar, typing delete 'foo.*' will result in rm: foo.*: No such file or directory. In the case of rm, they are interpreted as a list of fully qualified filenames to be deleted. Programs like this can be started from the command line and can read a list of arguments prog arg1 arg2 arg3 when they start up. This little program takes care of unlinking files. Without going into much details, the basis represents the available building blocks to represent a system. This is the exact reason why you can hear that people should use longer password, not complex-to-remember ones. If that value goes up (because you added one character in your password for instance), the entropy goes up which means that your password becomes stronger. This value (2 followed by 45 zeros), is directly related to the entropy we are talking about. Using only the 95 ASCII printable character, the attacker would need to try at most 2e45 passwords to correctly guess it. In practice, in the computer-security realm, it is related to the number of combinations ("states") that exist, that is to say, the number of possible passwords one has to try before guessing correctly.įor instance, take your 23-letter password. It basically represents the number of possible states reachable by a given system. The entropy is a concept coming from thermodynamics. It all depends on entropy as seen in link but also on a related concept: the basis. Your example password would essentially need to be generated completely randomly for it to have similar security (100 / log2(26) ~ 21.3 characters to get to about 100 bits: log2(26^21.3) ~ 100.12). (8 x 4.2 characters, plus 7 separator characters, is 40.6.)įor comparison, this is less than twice the length of your example ireallyhatebluemountains (which clocks in at 24 characters) but, as also illustrated by the other answers, is far more secure in practice and not much more difficult to remember. (100 / 12.9 ~ 7.752, and round upwards.) Since the average Diceware word is about 4.2 characters, and you need a separator (conventionally a space) between them, this means a passphrase giving you about 100 bits of security becomes approximately 41 characters long. 100 bits worth of security using Diceware needs eight words. For a reasonably well generated passphrase using ordinary play dice, this is probably a little less simply because all values are not equally probable.įor a high-value password where an offline attack is a feasible mode of attack, such as that to a password manager, I'd probably want at least 90-100 bits worth of security. Given those assumptions, we can actually directly calculate how difficult a Diceware passphrase is to guess: For a properly generated Diceware passphrase, each word corresponds to something very close to 12.9 bits of security. They might very well even know the length of your password. ![]() ![]() Since we normally assume that an adversary knows how you generated your password or passphrase but not the exact input or end result, this means that the adversary knows that you generated it using the Diceware method and dictionary. While for reasons of physics regular play dice tend to not be perfectly fair (produce every value with equal probability), if this is a concern to you then it is possible to buy "casino dice" that are perfectly fair however, the error is likely small enough that a single extra word accounts for any reasonable reduction in dice fairness, and you can easily test your own particular dice by making a reasonable number of throws and noting how many times each value comes up (which with perfectly fair dice and a large number of throws should be 1/6 the number of throws, because the dice is six-sided). In the specific case of Diceware, you use five throws of ordinary six-sided dice to generate about 12.9 bits (log2(6^5) = log(6^5) / log(2) ~ 12.92481. Also, in Diceware, if the generated sequence of words makes sense linguistically, you are actually supposed to start over.) In proper Diceware, you use a random physical process (throwing physical dice) to gather randomness, then convert that randomness into words by looking up the numbers in a list of words. (Diceware is similar to the scheme described in XKCD 936, but more explicit on how to gather the randomness. Instead, I like to recommend Diceware style passphrases. With today's computing resources, that's just not a practically achievable goal with a simple password any longer. Traditionally, this has led to the use of weird password schemes which have tried to combine the goals of making passwords memorable as well as making them secure. Thus, you should ensure that this password has a corresponding level of security. This is for a rather simple, fundamental reason: this one password, together with the encrypted password database that it protects, essentially allows full access to every account for which you have credentials stored within that database. (This is irrespective of which password manager you are using.) Let's first establish clearly what should be a common sense truth: A password manager master password is a very high value secret. ![]() ![]() When you switch between two medicines, there is a chance your child will get too much medicine.
